[TRANSLATED LYRICS] Arirang

Korean folk song, 600 year old and an excellent interpretation below by Jang Sa Ik:-

I always thought the Korean culture and civilisation is young but apparently it is very very old. And it is sort of funny that everytime I read about its history, there is always inevitably a mention of Japanese destroying something of significant to them.

Anyway, the lyrics, taken from the youtube video above. However here posts a different version so frankly I don't know which is which but the version above is awesome. I suppose different region different Arirang. The following should be the one as sung above. Do correct me if I am wrong;

Verse 1
Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo...
Arirang gogaero neomeoganda.
Nareul beorigo gasineun nimeun
Simnido motgaseo balbyeongnanda

Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo...
I am crossing over Arirang Pass.
The man/woman who abandoned me
Will not walk even ten li before his/her feet hurt.

Verse 2
Cheongcheonghaneuren byeoldo manko
Urine gaseumen kkumdo manta

Just as there are many stars in the clear sky,
There are also many dreams in our heart.

Verse 3
Jeogi jeo sani Baekdusaniraji
Dongji seotdaredo kkonman pinda

There, over there that mountain is Baekdu Mountain,
Where, even in the middle of winter days, flowers bloom.

[TRANSLATED LYRICS] Kau Ilhamku by Man Bai

The following is quite possibly my most favourite Malay song by Malaysian artiste, Man Bai. I find the Malay lyrics very beautiful and romantic ...

THE MALAY LYRICS

KAU ILHAMKU
Beribu bintang dilangit
Kini menghilang
Meraba aku dalam kelam
Rembulan mengambang
Kini makin suram
Pudar ilhamku tanpa arah

Sedetik wajahmu muncul
Dalam diam
Ada kerdipan ada sinar
Itukah bintang atau rembulan
Terima kasih kuucapkan

Izinkan kumencuri bayangan wajahmu
Izinkan ku mencuri khayalan denganmu
Maafkanlah oh...
Andai lagu ini
Mengganggu ruangan hidupmu
Kau senyumlah oh...
Sekadar memori
Kita di arena ini
Kau ilhamku
Kau ilhamku...

THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION
I know the lyrics but find it hard to explain since some words are rather formal. I thought ilham is inspiration but in another context it can be "You're my muse". However I find inspiration is a much more romantic word to use rather than muse which sounds like a professional relationship. Anyway my translation, not entirely accurate but I am not taking the literal meaning of the words...

YOU ARE MY INSPIRATION
Beribu bintang dilangit
Kini menghilang
Thousands of stars in the sky are disappearing

Meraba aku dalam kelam
As I wander in the dark

Rembulan mengambang
The rising moon

Kini makin suram
is now growing dim

Pudar ilhamku tanpa arah
My inspiration fades leaving me without any direction

Sedetik wajahmu muncul
Dalam diam
In the stillness a little of your face appears

Ada kerdipan ada sinar
There's a flicker, there's light

Itukah bintang atau rembulan
Is it a star or is it a moon

Terima kasih kuucapkan
Thank you I say to you

Izinkan kumencuri bayangan wajahmu
Allow me to steal a glance of (the shadow/silhouette of) your face

Izinkan ku mencuri khayalan denganmu
Allow me to steal some fantasy with you

Maafkanlah oh...
Oh forgive me

Andai lagu ini
Mengganggu ruangan hidupmu
If this song invades the space (privacy) in your life

Kau senyumlah oh...
Oh please smile

Sekadar memori
Kita di arena ini
Even if this is but a memory of us in this arena

Kau ilhamku
You're my inspiration

Kau ilhamku...
You're my inspiration

[TRANSLATED LYRICS] 風車/Windmill [Beyond The Realm Of Conscience subsong] by Charmaine Sheh

The following is the English translated lyrics of Charmaine Sheh's sub song on the series Beyond The Realm of Conscience entitled Windmill, translated a little by myself and whole large part of it quite excellently by Pearl. As usual some liberties is taken to interprete the whole meaning of each passages rather than literal meaning of each words. I thought it was a beautiful translation. Thanks to Pearl! Find out where to download the CD version below.

THE LYRICS
Charmaine Sheh - Windmill (Beyond The Realm Of Conscience)

Translated by Pearl and Funn Lim

Red windmill, please do turn a little and bring good fortune to my family.

Pray that the wind blows and that raindrops fall. So please do not be scared, little flower

The blossoming red flower, please do smile a little and bring good fortune to my family

The clouds float by. Listen to the wind speak. Please do not be scared, my dear child.

(this one's difficult to translate...It basically means that everything has its time and place - Pearl)
The phases of the moon will occur in time.
The heavens will decide when it should rain and when it should snow.

The feeling of longing is like a kite.
Even if we do not meet, there is still a thread that binds us together.

Red windmill, please do turn a little and bring good fortune to my family.

If we are seperated, and if the rain falls, my dear child, please do not be scared.

The road ahead, whether near or far, is unclear.
You long for me as you watch the stars.

If only I could take you with me along this road, when the air is still and the changes are clear.

Red windmill, please do turn a little and bring good fortune to my family.

If we are seperated, and if the rain falls, my dear child, please do not be scared.

Father and Mother miss you.

Red windmill, please do turn a little and bring good fortune to my family.

If we are seperated, and if the rain falls, my dear child, please do not be scared.

[TRANSLATED LYRICS] Asadoya Yunta

Thanks to some youtube commenters, I found the kinda original version of Confucius Says, or rather the Japanese version called Asadoya Yunta [安里屋ユンタ/沖縄民謡] which I used Google translator and it means Okinawan or People of Okinawa. However did some more search and the title may be Okinawan dialect so it may mean Song Of Asadoya. Did some more search and found more info here which says "Asadoya Yunta" is a song that originated in Okinawa about a woman named Asadoya nu Kuyama, who was brave enough to reject a wedding proposal from a government official." However that title is for the same song but different lyrics which can be found here. There are a lot of versions so I am just posting this one which took me some time to recognise the Roman Tam version in it. It is there, just some time. Apparently it is "a folk song of Yaeyama islands in Okinawa."

The lady singer looks super chic and not Japanese.

Anyway found another one, this one more like the Roman Tam version I recognise. Just finished listening to it. Bloody hell! LOVE IT!!! So gentle, kinda reminds of beaches! Ok, in the middle of the night it does sound scary. But the samisen sounds lovely!

The ROMAJI and KANJI lyrics. Very short song, so many versions but the video is this version which isn't about some woman rejecting the advances of an official, which is another version. All taken from here.

Saa kimi wa nonaka no ibara no hana ka (Saa yui yui)
Kurete kaereba yarehoni hiki tomeru (Mataharinu chindara kanushamayo)

Saa ureshi hazukashi ukina o tatete (Saa yui yui)
Nushi wa shirayuri yarehoni mama naranu (Mataharinu chindara kanushamayo)

Saa tagusa toru nara izayoi tsukiyo (Saa yui yui)
Futari de kigane mo yarehoni mizu irazu (Mataharinu chindara kanushama yo)

Saa somete agemasho konji no kosode (Saa yui yui)
Kakete okureyo nasake no tasuki (Mataharinu chindara kanushama yo)

Saa Okinawa yoitoko ichido wa mensoore (Saa yui yui)
Haru natsu aki fuyu midori no shima yo (Matahari nu chindara kanushama yo)

The English translation of the above version. All taken from here.

Oh, My wife is as a flower amidst a bed of thorns.
I hold you back when I return at dusk.

Oh, How happy, how ashamed to acquire a name of unfaithfulness.
My husband is like a white lily but too much for me to control

Oh, After working in the fields under the sixteen day old moon,
the two of us alone but somehow constrained

I have dyed for you, a dark blue kimono.
Please wear it with a sash as a sign of my affection.

Oh, Welcome to Okinawa, the green island with the four seasons of
Spring, summer, fall, and winter.

[TRANSLATED LYRICS] 团圆/Reunited [Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon TV series Themesong] by Eric Moo

This is the themesong for one of the best series on martial arts that is Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon BUT NOT the movie version starring Chow Yun Fatt (should have been JET LI!!!), directed by Ang Lee (should have been ZHANG YIMOU!!!) that introduced Zhang Zhiyi to the western audience but the TV series starring lesser knowns like Qiu Xinzhi, my one time obsession. I remembered this series fondly and oh so many years ago (though I never liked Peter Ho or Shui Ling) BUT what I remembered even more was the themesong by our very own Eric Moo called Reunited or Reunion or Tuan Yuan or 团圆. GREAT SONG! VERY WELL SUNG! Very limited lyrics!

Thanks to Pearl, I finally could say what the words mean. The song sounds long but the lyrics repeat itself again and again and again.

The song isn't going anywhere. It has been in my Sony Ericsson handphone since day 1.

TRANSLATED LYRICS
Thanks to Pearl

Walking all alone to the ends of the earth

I thought about the past, and of the bittersweet taste of growing up

How I wish I could gently caress your face one day

No matter how hard it might be, I will willingly bear the burden for you

Travelling around the world

It wasn't all in vain, being able to set foot on this earth

Dreams might be far from reach

But even in stormy weathers it will never change

The world unites in a heartbeat

Forming a huge circle with love

No matter how far dreams might be

As long as there is a home in your heart, they will eventually be fulfilled

Travelling  around the world

It wasn't all in vain, being able to set foot on this earth

Dreams might be far from reach

But even in stormy weathers it will never change

The world unites in a heartbeat

Forming a huge circle with love

No matter how far dreams might be

As long as there is a home in your heart, we will be reunited

Travelling  around the world

It wasn't all in vain, being able to set foot on this earth

[TRANSLATED LYRICS] 孔子曰/Confucius Says ,,, [Man Of Wisdom themesong] by Roman Tam

I can't quite imagine I have this song until I checked that I have it indeed. It is the themesong to one of the most entertaining TVB series (even if the acting may suck a bit)where Man Of Wisdom starred a very young Ada Choi whilst there was also a sequel, Man Of Wisdom II, both as entertaining and I checked, 1993 and 1995 respectively! Wow! Old! I am not sure which one was the themesong for but it was sung by the great Roman Tam and it has very complex lyrics, teachings of Confucius I suppose. I never knew what it meant, I mean I knew but can't quite explain it until thanks to 2 very generous souls who not only found the lyrics but translated the lyrics. Funny thing is my version in English is Confucius Says. Now when I searched for the lyrics it came out as Confucius Day! But like Kidd informed, the word "" is read as "Yeuk" in cantonese which can be "Say"/"Speak" or I suppose "Teach" as well? Not "Preach" though. I am sticking with "Say". The lyrics are repetitive though. A bit different version but in the end comes to the same thing. The translated lyrics I am posting is my own amalgamation of these 2 versions, much liberties have been used for certain meaning but I believe in the end the meaning is similar in Cantonese. I was rather not so surprised to find that the music was written by Japanese, as Kidd said "yuichi Sakamoto/Choho Miyaka/Katsu Hoshi". But the lyrics, quite simply difficult (which shows how great Cantonese can be) AND melodic. You can watch the music video here. Can't find this in youtube though.

ORIGINAL VERSION
The original version of this song is the Japanese folk song, Asadoya Yunta.

TRANSLATED LYRICS
A great big thanks to Kidd for finding the lyrics and also Pearl AND Kidd for translating the difficult lyrics.

Confucius says "see no evil"

Confucius says "hear no evil"

Confucius says "speak no evil"

Confucius says "touch no evil"

Are humans kind by nature

or are they evil from birth?

Who would one day turn towards evilness

who would turn away from evilness to embrace kindness?

It is your decision to make on which path to follow

When the time comes

You will reap what you sow

If one feels no desire, one will experience freedom

If one feels no longing, the competition will cease

An endless cycle of selfish love

will only lead to a lifetime of entrapment

Beware of corrupting your pure heart

When the time comes

You will reap what you sow

If this were a game,

one would have to sacrifice in order to win

In order to reap the benefits there must be effort

守規則
follow the rules

講道理
and be reasonable

如若你
If you desire victory

but you do not wish to put in any effort towards it

Or if you wish to win at all cost, disregarding the consequences

[LYRICS] My Love Will Get You Home by Christine Glass

I can't remember which TVB series OVERUSE this song but Google says The Last Breakthrough. Maybe this series also uses this song although I can't imagine Kevin Cheng being extremely angry or Roger Kwok being cunning and evil and this song is played. If I remember correctly, it must be "Heart Of Greed" where the song always appears whenever Raymond Lam and Linda Chung appears. What I do remember clearly is I was very annoyed with this song because it means ahhhh sappy love story moments again! Kinda like what series it was that overuse It's A Big Big World and I almost threw the TV out when the song was played for the millionth time in that series. Was it Detective Investigation Files IV with Louis Koo and Jessica Hester Hsuen? I ended up hating that song, till now. However this present song is very beautifully sung and very melodic and the lyrics is touching. I still quite like it. Just imagine yourself walking alone on the deserted streets with this song playing and your tears will suddenly flow. Why? I do not know. Sung by Christine Glass (yeah my first reaction was WHO?! also and I still don't know who she is) I am sure you can find the song everywhere but in case you can't, the download link after Read More link.

LYRICS
My Love Will Get You Home - Christine Glass

If you wander off too far, my love will get you home.
If you follow the wrong star, my love will get you home.
If you ever find yourself, lost and all alone,
get back on your feet and think of me, my love will get you home.
Boy, my love will get you home.

If the bright lights blinds your eyes, my love will get you home.
If your troubles break your stride, my love will get you home.
If you ever find yourself, lost and all alone,
get back on your feet and think of me, my love will get you home.
Boy, my love will get you home.

If you ever feel ashamed, my love will get you home.
When there's only you to blame, my love will get you home.
If you ever find yourself, lost and all alone,
get back on your feet and think of me, my love will get you home.
Boy, my love will get you home.

If you ever find yourself, lost and all alone,
get back on your feet and think of me, my love will get you home.
Boy, my love will get you home,
Boy, my love will get you home.

[TRANSLATED LYRICS] Suo Gân

One of my most favourite lullaby and I never knew what it meant until now. I know it is Welsh. The title I found out means Lullaby. This song was used to great effect in Empire Of The Sun and whenever I hear this song I will inevitably remember young Christian Bale's haunted face, those empty eyes, those confusion, those emptiness as his parents sought him out amongst the many children after WWII ended. I still remember that look. Beautiful song though and beautifully sung by Ambrosian Boys Choir which is the version I have. The lyrics and the download link after Read More link.

ORIGINAL LYRICS
Huna blentyn yn fy mynwes
Clyd a chynnes ydyw hon;
Breichiau mam sy'n dynn amdanat,
Cariad mam sy dan fy mron;
Ni cha' dim amharu'th gyntun,
Ni wna undyn â thi gam;
Huna'n dawel, annwyl blentyn,
Huna'n fwyn ar fron dy fam.
Huna'n dawel, heno, huna,
Huna'n fwyn, y tlws ei lun;
Pam yr wyt yn awr yn gwenu,
Gwenu'n dirion yn dy hun?
Ai angylion fry sy'n gwenu,
Arnat ti yn gwenu'n llon,
Tithau'n gwenu'n ôl dan huno,
Huno'n dawel ar fy mron?
Paid ag ofni, dim ond deilen
Gura, gura ar y ddôr;
Paid ag ofni, ton fach unig
Sua, sua ar lan y môr;
Huna blentyn, nid oes yma
Ddim i roddi iti fraw;
Gwena'n dawel yn fy mynwes
Ar yr engyl gwynion draw.

TRANSLATED LYRICS
Sleep my baby, at my breast,
’Tis a mother’s arms round you.
Make yourself a snug, warm nest.
Feel my love forever new.
Harm will not meet you in sleep,
Hurt will always pass you by.
Child beloved, always you’ll keep,
In sleep gentle, mother’s breast nigh.
Sleep in peace tonight, sleep,
O sleep gently, what a sight.
A smile I see in slumber deep,
What visions make your face bright?
Are the angels above smiling,
At you in your peaceful rest?
Are you beaming back while in
Peaceful slumber on mother’s breast?
Do not fear the sound, it’s a breeze
Brushing leaves against the door.
Do not dread the murmuring seas,
Lonely waves washing the shore.
Sleep child mine, there’s nothing here,
While in slumber at my breast,
Angels smiling, have no fear,
Holy angels guard your rest.
