I have written a review for this series with performance evaluation of everyone noteworthy so it is kinda long. Have a look.

And so it has ended. Kinda feel cheated. More thoughts coming soon...

I think I have 2 more episodes before it is the end. Da Mo Yao is the next series which I am quite excited about since it is the same period of time. I am hoping the international version has Huo Qubing as Huo Qubing.

So far this series has been very very entertaining even if I can fastfoward many scenes. So many deaths in these few episodes. Qubing's death was so sudden, quite an impact since he was so playful, so young, so mischevious and then just dead. Then Wei Qing's wife greatest sacrifice which I never expected since I expected her to die by illness and the Empress Chen who died of illness and now Wei Qing. Poor poor Wei Qing who died from exertion after fighting off enemies. I suspect next to die is Princess Ping Yang since she swore to her dying husband she will protect Zifu with her life. Maybe Mr Duan himself who was a ticking timebomb anyway. So many deaths all of a sudden. This series is like Schemes Of A Beauty where you practically see the characters grow old and die before your eyes. Of course so far this series has taken a few liberties with history. For one Li Furen did give birth to a son who will become emperor. But here she died with her child. Our Liu Che, that soon to be useless husband is supposed to be in his early sixties. Here he looks at best in mid 40s. Zifu should be quite advanced in age as well, for a woman back in those times, she looks no more than 30s. Her son and daughters are missing. Qubing died of a heart ailment. But these liberties make for interesting drama. I like to see how this series will handle Zifu's eventual suicide or will it be changed and how to reconcile Liu Che from a nice guy to a stern king to a jealous misguided king to someone the viewers can forgive for his treatment for the wholly blameless Zifu.

And I don't see Zifu as wholly blameless as this series would show her, the ultimate Mary Sue without an ounce of personality except total compliance, obedience and a dash of stubborness whenever the plot needed a push from the usual boring bland personality that is our Zifu. I feel if Zifu had the guts and I mean guts as in the heart  not in fearlessness but not blinded by her very Confucian teaching on being the stepford wife, maybe she wouldn't end up the way she was. Same goes for the boring stubborn Mr Duan who basically dug his grave by being so steadfast to a love that was never meant to be. He basically sowed the seed of dissent leading to the mistrust by the emperor who is far from perfect. Of course the emperor in digging the grave for Zifu has the ultimate blame.

I am waiting for the perfect ending and I suspect my conclusion is the same; the rise of Zifu helps her brother and nephew and friends and yet she too depend on them in the end. And when the persuasive Wei Qing, forceful Qubing, loyal Mr Duan and the rest dies or leaves, Zifu is all alone and without protection. This series did not show her other familial clans so we leave it at that. In the end as a woman back in those times who depends on the continued support and power of others to stay in power, perhaps it would have been the perfect end if she were to die first and still in favour. Maybe her son and others may still be alive. Basically she outlived the emperor's affection and her usefulness. How very sad.

I am watching this series called The Virtuous Queen Of Han, not knowing anyone except for Raymond Lam, one ke-le-fe HK actor turned heavy supporting actor and 9th prince from the awesome Yong Zheng Wang Chao (also the eunuch in Glamorous Imperial Concubine). So far rather entertaining and Raymond Lam did well, that sort of well that TVB could not milk from him.

My post is really about Wei Zifu. Everyone hates her. Or rather those who doesn't love her, hates her and in the end even her own husband will hate her. Poor woman. In history she was... longest serving empress? 2nd longest serving? Only to kill herself because husband went delusional. I am sure this series will show she killed herself to help her husband. I mean will they let Raymond Lam get off his white horse as the emperor Liu Che and become the manic bad guy?

Ahhhh we shall see. DON'T TELL ME!!

Anyway she is so virtuous I wonder how she can ever have babies. I mean wayyyyy  too virtuous that her best moment was when she went mad and finally said things normal human beings will.

But for fans of Raymond Lam (yeah I know you exist), come out! Come out! Watch that scene where he had battle of words with his on screen aunt and him screaming "Historians! WRITE! WRITE! THAT! DOWNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!"

I swear he wasn't OTT. It was quite right even if he seems rather... stiff at times. But way way wayyyyyy better than in that stupid Line Walker.

However I do not see him as an emperor. I don't know; doesn't strike me as one even if his errr debut (?) was the greatest emperor of all, Shih Huang Ti which was like 2 nose jobs and a chin job ago and when Karena wasn't born yet. Ok ok I digress dramatically. His voice actor is amazing though. Sounds like Raymond but isn't Raymond.

Nice series although could be better.

So far it is still everyone hates Wei Zifu and Wei Zifu doesn't understand why and the emperor not caring if everyone hates her.

And this series comes in waves, like Plants Vs Zombies.

Wave 1 : Supreme Empress Dowager (lady was awesome)
Wave 2 : Empress and aunt
Wave 3 : Empress Dowager
Wave 4 : Princess Pingyang
Wave 5 : Uncle of Emperor

So many enemies. Poor poor girl.

[O] TVB Series Roundup 2014

I know I said I won't be doing a TVB series roundup for 2014 but when I looked at the list I realised I watched more than half so I guess why not do one since I didn't write/completed the reviews for most of the series I watched. I did a similar series roundup in 2013 but that was quite brief.

Source
The list below is taken from Wikipedia

Which is in and which is not
All series from Dec 2013 (which was broadcast until Jan 2014 so it counts as part of 2014 calendar year) to Jan 2015 (where series originates from Dec 2014 so yeah, counts also) including China series.

Utter and total rubbish, and it isn't even funny. It feels tired, lethargic and to prove its point, it is shorter than most series. To me the worst series of the year and a travesty to my eyes. Don't waste your time on this crap.

I love it for Malaysian sceneries that I did not even know exists, I love it for Ruco Chan, I love it for the romance but it doesn't go beyond mid range rating for me because I hated it for Aimee Chan's poor uninspired and at times confusing performance, for that screechy actress called Lin Xiawei and the screwing up of the entire Malaysian geography for the sake of convenience. It has a solid story but unfortunately Aimee did not have the charm to carry the role of a supposed likable character that I find myself disliking increasingly and am unconvinced by their love affair because Aimee was holding back. Watch it for Ruco and that perfect shot of the Twin Towers (KLCC).

One of the best of the year with magnetic performances from the leads and an eye opener (for me at least) with regards to Cilla Kung who did quite well when she stopped screaming her lines. Steven and Tavia makes a great couple and I love so many scenes in this series except for the stupid ending. Watch but skip the last episode. Just pretend our hero drowned and that's it.

I consider this series the best thriller of the year. This is what Line Walker should be but isn't and Ruse Of Engagement should have Line Walker's budget but didn't. Released 3 years later but at the right time, it feels ahead of its time if released 3 years ago. It feels contemporary, the story is solid even if it does make you go huh?, some amazing scenes and an ending that I feel now after so many months as one of the most debated, shocking but apt ending. As usual I dislike Aimee in here and find myself liking Yoyo. Ruco is the reason why this series works. It just non stop action from episode 7 onwards, can't even breath. Definitely but skip the first 7 episodes and try to watch last episode with an open mind.

Absolutely snubbed at TVB awards! One of the best series of the year that was ignored during awards time. Marks the return of many veterans such as Carmen Lee who still looks gorgeous and can act superbly. Should have won TV Queen in my opinion. Flora Chan's best performance. Story may be repetetive but it concludes well. Alan Tam should have made a cameo. Definitely, for nostalgia, for some good acting.

China version and I watched every episode and frankly I liked it. Wu Yue as the Monkey King was superb. At times the story is cold, and I mean lacking a bit of empathy but at least it is more accessible as a story than the previous adaptations save for the best adaptation of all; by TVB. Despite what was said, I highly recommend it. But do be patient.

Wayne can do romance but this series is just insipid. It never had any direction and the so called love story is quite a slap on the face because in modern times to hear the sniggers over a love affair between a driver and his employer is to me so last century. And Wayne's character is over qualified to be a driver and more importantly, Louisa So slurred her lines so much she sounds like she is drunk the entire time. For me one of the most pointless series of the year. Avoid.

The smash hit of the year. It started out well, but as it went on it became 3 Infernal Affairs movie in one. Way too many spies and it becomes absolutely ridiculous when a triad king has 3 moles in his employment and they don't even know he is also a mole himself. There is no true villain until one appears at the end and much too briefly. The ending was horrible and no I didn't think Charmaine Sheh deserves her TV Queen. Yes she improves a lot but to me she is not the best performance of 2014. Sharon Chan should just retire. Watch for the excitement but in the end it is an empty shell full of excitement but not much commitment.

Started out well and then it went nowhere. The story was never fully realised. The love affair between an uncle and his "niece" is just gross. The only bright spark is Vincent Wong whose character was wasted and Josie Ho who deservedly won her TV Princess (aka supporting actress) but again her character was also wasted. Deserves to be seen but just once.

I don't know what to say about Linda Chung. She was trully horrid in this series, she never seems to be at ease and she seems so painful all the time. As the story shifts from her to everyone else, it became more bearable. Raymond Wong did well, Ruco basically played knight in shining armour and is wasted and the ending was just stupid but not in the scale of Bottled Passion but close enough. Not even for Ruco but this series shows why Samantha Ko deserves some recognition and why she should have been the lead in Outbound Love.

One of the weirdest series of the yeah and it made no apologies for being weird and inconsistent and having no storyline. Acting is superb, special mention to Louis Cheung and his biceps (he is mostly non-shirt in this series!) and King Sir for his mischevious performance. I never thought Chung King Fai can ever be funny but in this series, he was superbly funny and cute. Everybody else including Roger did well, as an ensemble cast this series is amazing. And who can forget the kissing scenes between May Chan and Bob Lam? Hot! And I appreciate the fact that some second liners got to shine in this series as important supporting cast. Definitely but don't expect a coherent storyline. Just go with the flow.

Best family drama of the year. Boasts some great performances from Elliot Yue, Nancy Wu, Susanna Kwan, Raymond Cho and some improvement for Jason Chan who sucked less in a character that is very very likable and a smashing debut by Grace Chan who became better as the series went on. Raymond Wong was good too but he was a miscast as the sexy, mysterious and unapologetic Hugo. Power Chan shines bright and showcases great chemistry with Wayne and the rest. The ending (not the final ending) was shocking but apt. For performances alone, yes. For the story, it takes some time to get used to but it does show a different dynamics between father and son with some heart wrenching moments when son pleads with father to accept him as a son. That was a fine acting moment by Wayne and Elliot.

An ongoing series that is getting stronger with each episode. So far the story is a mixed plot and it is going slow mo, slowly building up the story which to me is good. Kenneth is ok but Tavia is graceful even if she is not believable as a nun-in-study. Joel Chan is doing well to. It may be too early to conclude but thus far I like what I see. Definitely even if Kenneth OTT at times and is too old to be an immature 29 year old. I just feel Kenneth did ok but could have been so much better if he could make up his mind if he wants to play comedy or be serious in any given scene.

Watch it for Tavia who was simply wonderful in here. Kenneth Ma is cursed with the ever pouty lips puppy dog eyes look and he can't seem to shake it off. Read my review for more info. Plenty of info there!

OVERALL REPORT CARD FOR TVB FOR 2014
For me my best series were Ruse Of Engagament (Action Thriller), Storm In A Cocoon (Drama), Overachievers (Family Drama), M Club (Nostalgia), Come On Cousin (Comedy) and Black Heart White Soul (Storytelling & Performances).

Of all these, Ruse Of Engagement was my personal favourite because it shows TVB can do an intelligent action thriller with cliff hanger every single episode from episode 7 onwards.

The worst series was Diva In Distress. A complete waste of time.

So for 2014, out of 10, TVB gets a 7.I definitely enjoyed 2014 even if I didn't watch all the series but those I chose to watch were mostly entertaining with some hidden gems.  Maybe if I had seen it all perhaps my ratings would be lower! It is however a better year than the last with some good series or some series that was daring and started out well but as always with TVB series, falters and splutters. But at least they dared to try to do something new.

Hopefully for 2015, we get grander series with more emphasis on costume drama and more pure comedies.

A bit of news on personal level

Seriously, I am thinking how to make an app for my blog like v those app to post updates and all. Totally clueless but essential because right now I am depending on my phone to access my blog and it just takes a while to load. I wanna do something like those football club apps where it is like mini blog and loads faster. No idea how. Let me think. Meanwhile I am still here but blogging lesser because of restricted access to internet connection. I don't have free access anymore and I rarely blog at night. So I am sorry for the lack of updates. I am doing series round up. Just a short one. Will update later.

I am following Barcelona FC in the La Liga thingy because of one man that is Lionel Andres Messi aka Messi aka Leo aka da man. Been reading some news about him and I really hope perhaps Messi might feel brave enough to tell Barca FC to loan him out to every league in the world for 6 months or 1 campaign just to prove he can score anywhere and everywhere for the sake of statistics and shutting everyone who said "blahhh he only plays in la liga, hasn't proven himself". And to those who thinks CR7 (Cristiano Ronaldo or the peacock as I call him) is the best, well, he is flamboyant, confident and entertaining to watch but him punching people, etc gets tiring after a while. I like Messi. He is the work horse, the best there is, even his hairstyle says so. Most of the players in Barca seems to be of the same vein. Anyway are you following La Liga? Do post your thoughts using Post A Comment.

WHO IS LIONEL ANDRES MESSI

Unless you know zero about football/soccer, here is his Wikipedia with his bio where he was a kid with Hormone Deficiency Syndrome and a whole lotta drama for such an unassuming man with such a great talent, a recommended book in English which I thought is well written (Messi by Guillem Balague) and check out the links above to see the man who is seriously getting hotter looking each day. Frankly and seriously I am a little too late on the bandwagon. Messi has already reached his greatest height at about I suppose 24? Well good for us all now, he is reaching the sequel of his height like a 2.0 and he is only 27. Yes, no World Cup but that doesn't define him. I will post a nice picture of him when I find one.

WHERE TO WATCH LIVE STREAMING OF BARCA MATCHES
The timing can't be any worse but if you have the stamina and TV (ASTRO) doesn't have it (I really am not sure, need to check), you can watch a good quality live streaming with English commentary HERE. Go to the page about 10 minutes before start of the game and then choose any of the available channel, search for the English one and just sit back and watch the ads, commentaries, etc before the game starts. Timing is like this; if 7pm GMT it is about 3am Malaysian time. Yeah, great huh?

05.01.2015
If you are following me in Twitter (search for Funn Lim or funnlim), you will know my Twitter is now dedicated to my thoughts on Lionel Messi. I admire him. I respect him. I am totally in awe with him. I am just sad I just began to know his awesomeness since World Cup 2014. I don't even want to debate on the whole Cristiano Ronaldo thing. His best year is supposedly Messi's worst year and yet Messi got a lot of flak from goal ratios to CR7's potential breaking Messi's record. See it? POTENTIAL. Until CR7 does, then let's talk statistic.

Anyway you have got to see this crazy Japanese TV show challenge in TBS' Kyokugen 2014 show aired I believe on either 31.12,2014 or 01.01.2015 where Leo had to do the impossible in a segment called Lifting High;

1. kick a ball to hit  a falling flower pot. He almost did it once but yes he failed and I expected him to. But he came very close. An impossible task anyway.

2. kick a ball over   barrier, run over and receive the ball and stabilise it in no more than 3 touches. Now this is the one that is simply awesome and do-able, if you're the best footballer ever. I am sure many footballers can do it, but Messi did it in style; aka he kicked once, ran over, stabilise it in first touch and by 3rd touch the ball is basically just like those keepy uppy sort of thingy. He started I think with 10m because the record was .. 8m? Anyway 10m is as high as those Olympic diving platform. He did it with ease. I think then it was 13m? As high as the Buddha statue in Kamakura. No problemo. 15m which is as high as some ancient building and he did it perfectly. Then 18m, as high as a dojo and now he starts to get worried but guess what? No problemo! Then he said 20m which is as high as a sphinx and that's when the video stopped and I guess he failed, which is ok. Not sure if he couldn't get the ball over the barrier or he couldn't get the ball. I bet he couldn't get it over the barrier because I doubt he couldn't receive the ball. That man is just pure footballing genius. You just gotta watch this and marvel. And I am hoping to find the full video. Anyway give it to the Japanese for devising ways to test talented people to the max. Maybe to practice ball control Barca should start doing this. Try kicking the ball over Camp Nou, run over and receive it!!

Anyway, enjoy! Not many times can see Leo doing something like this that HE NEVER DOES out of Japanese TV. Yes everyone sells their soul for Japan. Why not eh if we get such gems?

Hmmm this was obviously filmed before the horrendous ball-sword-10 tattoo.

The following video was actually uploaded in 2010 but it is still relevant today. And very funny as well as very addictive. Have a look;

Good luck to Barca in the first Championship League game and hopefully Messi scores a few goals to break whatever record he has yet to break!

30.08.2014
This is a parody show in Barcelona and this is just too funny not to repost. There's English subtitles so do remember to switch it on if you can't see it.

26.08.2014
There's one thing I notice about La Liga matches. They can have many many goals and only perhaps  3 clubs are top contenders, Barcelona being one of them, the other two you can google the answer. Sometimes 2-0, 23-0, 3-1, 6-0, 8-0... crazy but I enjoy the pace. I am told La Liga is more violent in game play and yet was told EPL (English Premiere League which is many Asians are fans of) is much faster paced. I do not know, since I only watch football once every 4 years. But now I make an exception because of Lio (or issit Leo?) but it is not convenient at all. Most I have is pictures, snippets, major news reporting. I am however rather happy. He makes football interesting and he is not bad looking either. I also notice footballers generally look a decade older than their real age. The running around must have zapped their energy, or maybe they're not Beckham, they don't use mosturizer. They also marry women with dubious background and dubious past, or rather they don't care as long as wife is hot. Messi is the same with the difference his wife is already pretty as a child. They knew each other since young but I don't agree they were childhood sweethearts. He is one of those exception. Anyway I am hoping to expand on this post of mine with more on Barca, La Liga, Messi and other interesting La Liga players, so do check back often!
