Thank you TVB!! And I do mean it!

I am watching Fan Bing Bing's Empress of China aka the boobies show. I've read some horror editing stories from the China version after some group complained about showing off women's natural assets even when I frankly didn't know some of them had it. So I was thinking what will TVB do? Well they will edit the show with fewer episodes (well, faster pace I guess) AND as I watched the 1st episode, intelligently and utilising every resources they have, digitally cover the boobies with some clever digitally added clothes which is colour matched and got folds and even shading which shows TVB at its best in digital stuff and unfortunately used on other productions than their own. Wow...gotta admit, no boobies but no horror editing does equal some nice enjoyment of the show thus far even if the story of a paedophile men and ultimately woman (well Wuzetian did fall for a guy young enough to be her son?) is scary and the fact Fan Bing Bing's plays a 14 year old with ample breasts and with so much make up and frozen expression is scary as well.

Kathy Chow and the other "older" actresses were more expressive.

Anyway my ode to the boobies you SHALL NOT see in the show and frankly don't miss them. At least no too much close ups of those scary faces although the clothes were too high up for my taste. I did hope TVB would alter the OTT ugly fake hair.

Next complain? Cover those man abs in K-drama please!!! How will TVB do it? Another layer of manly looking woolly bathrobes??

  1. I watched this. Hated it. And it has got nothing to do with the close up of the heads. The plot is all over the place and uninspiring. I thought they spent to much time in showing how beautiful FBB was at every angle and how great a girl WZT is than actually write a good plot. The costumes were beautiful, but too shiny, bulky and colourful for my taste. Some of the later costumes looked liked it came from a stage production. I prefer simpler costumes where the actresses could actually move and breathe in.

I liked the villain Lady Wei (Zhang Ting) more than WZT. Her relationship with Prince Wei was strangely tragic.

There is just too much WZT remakes in the past decade. I wish they would just leave her alone and stop focussing on her emotions rather than her ambition.

    1. I've given up on this series. As the series went on and on, the hair got bigger and bigger and the costumes weirder and weirder. It felt more like some crazy fashion show than some story about a very important historical figure. ANd I think the entire logic of son marrying his father's wife who was pregnant with his father's child is stupid. At least in history the records tried to stress sex was minimal and no children.

Spot on. I thin FBB did put a lot of effort and money into the costumes and sets which were very grand but it is too flowery and not enough contrast. The taste is very ? corny. Sometimes less is more. This is not the case in here.

Well, SARFT dealt with that problem cos they changed the story and made it the son's kid. Which makes it worse since WMN was devastated at the death of her first husband and the son came to hug and comfort her. The changes actually made that they had relations on that night!!! That is a horrible change! Who has sex with their stepson on the night that their husband died?

And are we to believe that this is a pure unadulterated love? Sure, the man was willing to go against everything to marry her as his wife. But then he slept her sister's daughter and had to protest that he did it out of love for her. (He apparently slept with the sister as well in history but it wasn't touched on in this series) Ewww. How is that true love? And then she took on two sissy lovers a third of her age after he died. How is that true love?

I only made it through this series because I had a pact with someone to watch it together and then diss it. Same way I had to make my way through Wallace H and Tiffany's series which was not a good experience. I ranted about that as well.

    1. Oh I didn't watch that part. I suppose grief sex is in thing.

You mean Perfect Couple? But that was at least better. At least I can count the kissing scenes and how long each kissing scene is. My god, such fan service, kiss so many times and so many ways and for very long time. Costumes sorta nice also. But the story is big roundabout.

FBB's series is losing story, like missing the point. Too much attention on the costume, too little on the story.

I love Journey of Flower because the costumes is just perfection, story so far is ok, but something's gotta give like cgi and kung fu.

P/s never see FBB as empress material. Sun Li would have done a smashing job.

    2. Sorry, I burst out laughing whenever Wallace starts spitting on people. But it is better than FBB's drama.

The costumes in "Pefect Couple" were strange. The guys were ok but Vivian Wu had this horrible big wig on her head that was way too big to be from the Ming Dynasty. It was as if she came from the WZT drama, changed clothes but forgot to change the Tang Dynasty hair. TIffany is a pretty big but the hair? Makes her look like the maid than the young mistress of a prominent family.

The story is a bit blur and cliched. I didn't even like Wallace's character due to his arrogant attitude, and Tiffany's character is brainless. They have a lot of chemistry and are good looking people, but I did not enjoy it. My dad did though. But Jia Qing was really pretty. And the end song is great.

FBB's WZT series is strange because it places two thirds onto a part of her life where she really doesn't do anything, and then one third on decades of her life which is very interesting.

So in the end, we are left with a messy love story with lots of catfights and WZT's real achievements are summarised into 30 mins of screentime. I didn't even get what the series wanted to express in the end. At least with TJOF, we learn that you're doomed if fate works against you and learn about different expressions of love.

But here? Love is the most important thing on earth? Powerful women are but weak emotional beings inside? Men are lustful creatures? I don't get it!

I love TJOF because of the depth of the characters. I like exploring and analysing. The costumes, hairstyles and hair ornaments are elegant and simple without being clumsy and the costumes designer is not colourblind (see YZ's series).

I think Ruby's production team has better taste than FBB's production team in terms of ancient costumes. Looking at QSHF and the upcoming CGX, they are more easily on the eyes without losing the grandness. Less is more.

FBB doesn't have the look of a dominating woman. Neither does Ruby so I complained when I watched "Young Sherlock" (crappy english title as well) and saw her as MZT. Sun Li is marvellous. She has a fantastic screen presence.

    3. Vivian Wu looked dignified. And it took me the longest of time to connect who is Vivian Wu. I didn't even notice that when I was watching and suddenly it hit me. Wow! How on earth Wallace managed to get her to act in his production?

My only complain is she is far too young looking to have Wallace as her son.
